Description

Historic England is seeking to appoint a contractor to design, build and deliver the Interpretation Project which is an integral part of the HLF-funded Main Mill & Kiln Project at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings. The Project aims to restore and conserve a group of 'at risk' buildings on this unique and important industrial heritage site, including the World's first iron-framed building. The Grade 1 Main Mill has huge importance in the history of architecture and engineering and is undoubtedly of international significance while the site is exceptionally rich in social, economic and technological history.
The project is being managed through a partnership comprising Historic England, Shropshire Council and the Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings (the Friends). Historic England is the lead partner and accountable body for the project. The Friends were established in August 2010 and are a key partner in the project. They have been managing public access and engagement since 2010, including operating the small Visitor Centre (in the Office & Stables) that opened in 2014. They will be responsible for future visitor operations and community engagement across the site, including the operation of the much larger visitor centre on the ground floor of the Main Mill.
