Description

The main objective of this work is to support the industry in the introduction of battery powered trains with a clear understanding of the differences and issues that arise in their operation as a result of the new traction power source by:
•Understanding current battery technology available for rail use and review existing/planned projects. Identify safety and operational issues and transferable standards from other industries to rail.
•Undertaking a risk assessment of a battery powered train in different configurations (battery only or hybrid/ multi-mode) and its system interfaces - including charging solutions - and proposing mitigation actions.
•Informing specific design solutions for battery powered trains and charging solutions through a sound understanding of operational considerations and safety risk.
•Producing a safety and compatibility assessment methodology and roadmap.
