Description

The Office for National Statistics has been Measuring National Well-being since 2011. The framework itself, and the measures within, were established from a National debate in 2010 which generated 34,000 responses. These responses helped us develop the 10 areas of life captured in the framework. These are Personal Well-being, Our Relationships, Health, What we do, Where we live, Personal finance, Economy, Education and Skills, Governance and Environment. Covid-19 pandemic in itself has highlighted that these areas are still as important now as they were 12 years ago, but we would like to review the measures themselves to make sure they still reflect what is important to the public today. As part of a review programme for the next 6 months the Quality of Life team in the Analysis Hub would like to carry out some qualitative research with groups at risk of low well-being to make sure the measures are representative of all in society.

We would like focus groups with groups such as:
- LGBTQ+
- Ethnic minorities
- Those with poor health and/ or disabilities

If needed, these focus groups may be supplemented with depth interviews of one or two attendees of each focus group.

The Measures of National well-being cover the UK and therefore these focus groups should take part in each country of the UK and organisers should be mindful of well-being biases from composition of sex , age, socio-economic background and urban/ rural locality. Depending on composition of group it may be appropriate to run 1 - 2 focus groups with each group (totalling up to 6).

The research would need to be completed by 28th February 2023. With a summary research report of findings, outlining methods used, composition of sample and summary thematic findings.

This exercise is currently just to gauge interest - the publication of the procurement is subject to internal governance.
