Description

The Sheffield Royce Institute is a~£34M project based in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Sheffield is part of the national Henry Royce Institute (with the main Hub in Manchester) which aims to grow the UK world-leading research and innovation base in advanced materials science, fundamental to all industrial sectors and the national economy. The Sheffield Royce Institute focuses on Advanced Materials Processing and will be delivered through two centres - the Royce Discovery Centre (RDC) and the Royce Translational Centre (RTC). These state of the art facilities will allow materials discovery, materials manufacturing and prototype production and will act as an open access centre of excellence for the UK.

Proposals are invited for:

A continuous extrusion that is suitable for processing both low strength (aluminium alloys) and high strength (titanium alloys) in both powder and rod feedstock forms into fully dense products. Continuous extrusion will provide the Henry Royce Institute (HRI) a unique ability to convert oversized GA powder, used ALM powder and machining swarf into wire for a range of sectors, including wire fed ALM feedstock. The machine will be situated in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The University of Sheffield and will be a unique, key strategic piece of equipment in the HRI. The machine will be utilized in a range of research projects ranging from novel alloy extrusion, nano-structured/ ultra-fine grained materials and metallic alloy recycling. While the machine will be housed at the University of Sheffield it will be made available to both academic and industrial partners across the whole of the United Kingdom.
