Description
Roker Pier is the main breakwater to the River Wear harbour entrance; a grade II Listed structure constructed from 1885 to 1903. The Pier is 609m long, 10.6m wide at the shoreside increasing to 12.10m wide at the seaward end, terminating in a roundhead measuring 20.1m across. The Pier resides within the 'Durham Coast Special Area of Conservation' and also lies within the 'Roker Park Conservation Area'. The original Victorian cast iron post and rail fencing is to be retained, re-furbished and re-decorated, whilst the newer style Tubular post and rail systems are to be renewed with a steel core polyurethane covered matching Victorian pattern system. Whilst precise replication of the original Victorian fencing is critical to the project's success; bidders must be aware of the implications of working on an exposed structure, where a rapidly changing climate can dramatically affect short and medium term programming of works. The Pier will remain open during the works to members of the public; in particular local fishermen will access the structure both day and night when the sea state allows.
