Description
Resistance to antibiotics has recently been described as a global public health crisis and the O'Neill Review in 2015 has estimated that by 2050 antimicrobial resistance will be the leading cause of death, with a predicted 10 million deaths per year.
An underappreciated reservoir of resistance bacteria is thought to be the environment. There is a continuous release of antibiotics from human activities; therefore there is an underappreciated reservoir of resistance bacteria in the environment that can lead to the build-up of antibiotics in water.
The aim of the project is to: conduct a Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA), in order to enhance our understanding of the relative risks to human health from the occurrence of AMR /ARGs in the aquatic environment.
