Description

Cefas operates across a diverse range of environments undertaking a breadth of activities, each with distinct H&S considerations.

Scientific Research and Fieldwork
• Includes marine and freshwater science, environmental monitoring, and aquaculture assessments
• Fieldwork often involves working in, on, or near water, handling biological samples, and deploying monitoring equipment
Laboratory-Based Science
• Conducted at Cefas facilities such as Lowestoft and Weymouth laboratories
• Involves handling hazardous substances (COSHH), use of specialist equipment, and adherence to strict lab safety protocols
Vessel-Based Operations
• Work aboard research vessels like the RV Cefas Endeavour, and a range of chartered vessels, includes sampling, equipment deployment, and navigation in challenging marine conditions.
Emergency Response
• Cefas leads initiatives like Premiam, providing scientific support during marine pollution events and other environmental emergencies

The training Cefas provides is designed to ensure that we are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and awareness necessary to work safely, protect colleagues and others potentially impacted by our work, and minimise environmental risks. Our tailored health and safety training programmes for fieldworkers, those working on and near water, and laboratory staff ensures that our workforce is prepared to work safely and effectively, whatever their environment.
