Description

As of 2019 there are almost two million people in the UK living with sight loss - this is expected to double by 2050. Eyecare is the largest outpatient speciality with around eight million appointments annually, and deliver the highest volume procedure with over 400,00 cataracts each year.

As part of the Long Term Plan, a national mobilisation plan for local systems to roll out muscular and skeletal (MSK) services for patients across the country has been developed. The whole NHS England patient population will have direct access to MSK First Contact Practitioners by 2023/24, across all Primary Care Networks. The effect on the service as a whole needs to be carefully considered with a model for care based around the predicted impact of the service on the NHS for the next five years.

In order to rapidly reduce the backlog of cardiac services are in the process of setting up networks who need to be able to deliver plan appropriately to support recovery and service transformation. Long-term planning is imperative, and a substantial element of this will be reliant on accurate prediction of the potential drivers that will affect the demand for treatment in the next five years.

Thus, a data-driven tool is required by NHS England to work out and plan capacity for the drivers behind increasing demand for eyecare, muscular skeletal and cardiac services in the NHS.
Design and building of a web-based interactive tool that can accurately predict and assess the drivers behind increasing demand for eyecare, muscular skeletal and cardiac services on the NHS over a five-year timescale
To enable users to formulate commissioning and governance policies and measures are put into place presently that take into account the burden of these specialties for up to five years and beyond 2021/22.
A web-based tool that has the ability to benchmark current demand for said treatments against workforce capacity, financial spend and potential patient demand.
