Description

New build of housing and schools

It is proposed that the two uses on the site are realised through two separate buildings, allowing both distinct phasing during the construction stages and simplicity of ongoing separate maintenance. The school design comprises a new build three storey L-shaped teaching block containing classrooms, group spaces, administration and staff areas. The formal front door is accessed direct from Baltic Street West making good use of a currently secluded area.
The classrooms are stacked across three floors. Nursery and Reception classes are on the ground floor with free flow access to their own external space. Pairs of classrooms are located on the first and second floors, giving each year group ownership of independent areas of the building. The circulation is located on the south side of the classrooms assisting with solar shading to the classrooms. Breakout spaces are located adjacent to the entrance to each classroom ensuring they are generous and well lit. The new hall will provide the space for a full catering kitchen and servery, and sufficient storage to allow dining chairs and tables to be easily stored to allow the hall to be used for both sport and gym.
The residential units are each simply planned, stacked, dual aspect homes. The height and mass of the residential development has been the subject of much discussion with the Planning Department throughout the development of the Stage 2 design.
