Description

Develop a highly sensitive vapour detector based on an already existing technology, that can be used to assess the state of hydraulic seals and to detect fuel and hydraulic fluid leaks. The device will be able to detect trace levels of vapours (part per billion) and offer a more precise and accurate way of detecting fuel and hydraulic fluid leaks. It would also help to locate a damaged seal that is about to cause a leak. The device will provide instantaneous reading of the detected level of the targeted vapour and will be portable and easily deployable. It will operate on a 'switch on and detect' basis, with little to no maintenance and no consumables needed, therefore will be very easy to maintain in working condition. Because the sensor is based on laser technology, it shall be safe to the human eye.
 Identify the spectroscopic requirements of the analyser (e.g. review the fluids / fuel composition,Identify the target compounds,
 Perform spectroscopic absorption preliminary measurements, select the lasers,
 Assess the stability of vapours of fuel
 Modify a laboratory-based analyser and integrate the lasers,
 Complete a demonstration proof-of-concept of the prototype and
The work is to be undertaken in accordance with the SBRI application 59529-446169 submitted and held by Innovate UK for the Non-Destructive Evaluation programme. Key Deliverables are:
1. Intermediate Report: results and conclusions of Phase 1a (01/02/2016)
2. Develop and demonstrate a working prototype of the proposed system (02/05/2016)
3. Delivery of Final Report of all Phase 1 activities and findings (13/05/2016)
