Description
We would like to replace the shelving and furniture on the ground floor of the Central Library. The following is a list of requirement:
Functional specification
The system will be a modular system designed to offer maximum design freedom -mobile units with connecting fillets for directional changes and creating defined physical spaces. The library currently holds 20,000 items which include both hardback and paperback books, large print and books on CD. books displays are also desirable. The area also has PC workstations and study facilities, alongside two self-service kiosk and one health monitor
Shelving
The shelving must have proven performance in high traffic library environments and must be built-to-last, with a 10-year warranty (assuming fair wear and tear). They should also be available in a range of colours.
Standards Compliance
The shelving must be tested to BS 4875-7:2006, ensuring it can endure the demands of a busy library. This includes tests for structural integrity, durability, and safety, providing evidence that the products are built to last.
All shelving and furniture components must be manufactured under an ISO9001-accredited process to meet relevant British and European standards.
All suppliers must hold environmentally responsible credentials, including FSC certificates for wood-based products.
Counter
A replacement counter is required. This can be a modular system or a large desk. We also require additional lockable storage for staff files, materials, newspapers and magazines etc.
Furniture
Seating Furniture must be tested to BS EN 16139:2013 - Strength, durability & safety and BS EN 1021-1 / 2 Assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture.
The fabrics must be recommended for task and soft seating within public environments. Tables must be tested to BS EN 15372 Level 2 is a European standard that specifies requirements for the safety, strength, and durability of non-domestic tables. Study facilities and PC workstations are also required
General Design
The central Library is a grade II* listed building so experience of working in a heritage-sensitive environment is essential. The design proposal should be one that balances vibrancy with respect, innovation with compliance. The design should be structured around three core principles: zoning, flow, and engagement.
The space should be accessible to all abilities, including those with disabilities. This includes aisles for wheelchair access. The layout should give good sightlines for easy supervision by staff, enhancing safety and security.
