Description

The economic backdrop for international student mobility is deteriorating. Several shocks have hit a world economy already weakened by the pandemic: higher-than-expected inflation worldwide triggering tighter financial conditions; a worse-than-anticipated slowdown in China, and negative spill overs from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This research project will seek to explore how the current global economic slowdown is likely to impact on global flows of internationally mobile students over the next 2-5 years; which of the major source markets for international students are most exposed, what are the specific risk factors to monitor across the UK's main source markets, and what are the potential economic impacts facing the UK HE sector under various outlook scenarios?
