Description
As part of the National Highways LED Rollout, the organisation has set a target for 70% of
streetlights to be converted to LED by 31 March 2027, supporting the broader Net Zero
Carbon commitment.
This initiative includes investment in Central Management Systems (CMS) - a central
software platform, designed to optimise network interventions while enhancing lighting
control and energy usage monitoring. i.e. by extending lamp life, providing remote
monitoring and control of energy usage and fault reporting; reducing energy usage and
carbon emissions, and by removing the need for scouting / roadside visits.
CMS are essential in modern street lighting systems that dim lighting in accordance with
standards and guidance, when traffic flows are lighter. However, it has become clear that
the CMS is not being utilised to its full potential and requires optimisation to deliver the
intended benefits.
