Description
To complete a clean and maintenance to the Grade II listed memorial.
The proposed cleaning method has been selected based on a detailed analysis of the memorial's materials and the types of soiling present. The cleaning will involve Low-pressure Steam Cleaning (DOFF style) using the 150 degree temperature of the steam to remove soiling, not high pressure, so no damage to the stone (removes algae, organic growth, paint etc). This method is chemical free and environmentally friendly, non-toxic and non-hazardous, causing no damage to the surface being cleaned. Additional compounds may be used to aid cleaning.
Historic England and War Memorials Trust, have authorised this method of cleaning previously, depending upon the cleaning requirements. All pointing required on the memorial is undertaken using Lime Mortar, this is also usually supported by both Historic England and War Memorials Trust.
The proposed cleaning is designed to have minimal impact on the heritage values of the memorial:
• Respect for Original Materials: Careful selection of cleaning methods ensures no harm to the original stonework and inscriptions.
• Reversibility: The cleaning process is non-invasive and reversible, adhering to best practices in heritage conservation.
• Enhanced Understanding: By cleaning the memorial, the inscriptions and details will be more legible, enhancing public understanding and appreciation of the memorial's significance.
To mitigate any potential negative impacts, the following measures will be implemented:
• Detailed Documentation: Photographic and written records of the memorial's condition before, during, and after cleaning.
• Monitoring: Regular monitoring of the memorial post-cleaning to assess any long-term effects and address any issues promptly.
• Public Communication: Informing the community about the cleaning process and its importance to ensure public support and understanding.
• Conservation Guidelines: The work will be undertaken following conservation guidelines and best practices.
