Description

NOTE: This notice was updated on 25 June 2021 for the following reason: We are extending the date of submission to 23rd July .
We will upload the amended the Guidance to Tenderers to reflect the amended schedule shortly .(Common and enabling tasks
•Considering how much of the existing freight traffic can or must be managed:
-wholly by electrified freight trains,
-wholly by self-powered vehicles, or
-by a practical combination of both traction methods.
•Considering the issues and constraints for track sections extending off the mainline GB rail network that are neither owned nor operated by Network Rail. Such may include the practical and economic constraints for electrification on these sections, or other factors which mean that access to electrification is limited or effectively not available, and where self-powered options may be needed.
•Assessing the impacts of the rollout of electrification on transitional arrangements for freight traction.
•Considering the absolute need for some form of thermal traction within the future freight traction mix.
•Reviewing estimates of future rail freight growth.
For output 1
•Reviewing outputs from TDNS on where lines may be prioritised for electrification to support freight decarbonisation.
•Mapping current and future electrification against regular freight routes and occasional freight routes.
•Energy 'audit' of the power and energy demand for a sufficient variety of representative freight journeys, taking into account freight, route and operations conditions.
•Developing a model to capture the power and energy demand of freight corridor and associated user manual/ guidance document
•Mapping modelled scenarios against known emissions and operational data from other projects.
•Generating normalised estimates of cost-effectiveness, such as £/kgCO2e saved for different self-powered options.
For output 2
•A review of the adequacy of existing and planned power supplies on existing and planned freight corridors on the 3rd rail network
•A review of locations on the 25kV OLE network known to be or likely to be inadequate for existing and planned freight corridors
•Identify and assess options to overcome electric power supply limitations)
