Description

The NHS spends £16.8 billion a year on medicines. Effective spending on medicines will be fundamental to the aims of the NHS in delivering the best possible outcomes in as cost-effective a way as possible. Driving better value from medicines spend will also be central to ensuring financial sustainability of the NHS.

To support these ambitions, NHS England has developed a cross-cutting programme, working with NHS Digital and NHS Improvement, across four work-streams:

- Policy framework - developing the overarching framework at a national and local level that governs access and pricing of medicines
- Commercial arrangements - determine the price that the NHS pays for individual medicines and the reimbursement mechanisms that are used
- Monitoring and review - putting in place systems to ensure appropriate usage, reduce wastage and ensure uptake.
- Better infrastructure - to underpin implementation, including the Digital Medicines Strategy, the supply chain and community pharmacy
