Description

Lake District to offer attractive and sustainable means of moving people around and travelling between different attractions and destinations without reliance on the private vehicle. Some of this potential has already been realised.

We have illustrated our intentions for how visitor movement will function in the future using a series of Visitor Movement Maps https://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/caringfor/smarter-travel and based on these a number of programmes have been taken forward to influence how people travel into Lake District.

• The Go Lakes Travel Programme has given us an exciting glimpse of how the Lake District could be for visitors - integrated, high quality cycle routes, a network of jetties for lake services to make frequent stops at, buses and boats that carry bikes, improved railway station facilities, electric cars for hire by the hour, and charging points to keep them on the move.
• Following this successful programme a new programme is underway, called See More, which aims to build on the Go Lakes legacy and identify options to improve transport for international visitors along a number of strategic corridors.

These interventions will enable residents and visitors to reduce the need for car by either parking all day in one location and use this new infrastructure to walk, cycle or use the boat services on the lake.

Over the last three years the Lake District National Authority working in partnership with other stakeholders has secured significant EU Funding (European Regional Development Fund and European Structural and Investment Funds (ERDF and ESIF)). There has also been financial input from the Growth Deal from the Cumbria LEP and Highway England.

This funding has underpinned two major infrastructure investment programmes - Low Carbon Lake District and now Low Carbon Lake District II.

The Low Carbon Lake District II Programme builds on the previous Low Carbon Lake District programme currently being delivered by the Lake District National Park Authority by engaging external delivery partners to expand low carbon delivery capacity, engagement and reach across the Lake District. Allowing for the simultaneous delivery across major destinations and gateway locations.

Under Low Carbon Lake District - 5km of the Keswick to Threlkeld multi-user trail, has been reinstated after significant sections of path were destroyed in 2015 during Storm Desmond and improvements to increase accessibility and future flood resilience have been delivered.
Now through Low Carbon Lake District II- we will construct two new multi- user trails. The Southern Windermere Trail and the Derwent Water Way.

Each multi-user trail has been subject to an economic impact assessment. This has defined the key outputs and outcomes and a process of measuring the benefits that should be delivered.
