Description

Historic England is the government's expert advisory service for England's historic environment. We give constructive advice on the historic environment to local authorities, owners and the public. We champion historic places helping people to understand, value and care for them, now and for the future.

Each year, Historic England produce and publish an annual survey of the state of England's historic environment entitled Heritage Counts on behalf of the Historic Environment Forum (HEF). The HEF is the top level cross-sectoral committee, bringing together chief executives and policy officers from public and non-government heritage bodies to co-ordinate initiatives such as the Heritage Counts, and to strengthen advocacy work and communications. Heritage Counts aims to provide historic environment professionals and those interested in the historic environment with the evidence and data required to advocate for heritage, make decisions and influence policy about the historic environment.

Each year Heritage Counts explores the social and economic impact of the historic environment and focuses on a different theme. Conservation Areas are the theme of Heritage Counts 2017.

2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Conservation Area legislation introduced in the 1967 Civic Amenities Act.

Civic Amenities Act 1967, CHAPTER 69: \"An Act to make further provision for the protection and improvement of buildings of architectural or historic interest and of the character of areas of such interest; for the preservation and planting of trees; and for the orderly disposal of disused vehicles and equipment and other rubbish\". [27th July 1967]

Historic England wishes to commission research on behalf of the Historic Environment Forum (HEF) on

socio-economic trends in Conservation Areas. The research will examine the extent to which conservation area designation encourages \"good growth\". That is long term sustainable growth.
