Description

This brief is for the individual survey of thirteen buildings within the Kasbah Conservation Area and the Old Fish Docks. Nationally, within its maze of streets this area represents the country's largest collection of fishing industry related structures in what was the premier fishing town. These include smokehouses, fish processing works, warehouses, shops, and an insurance office. The historic core of this area is the Kasbah Conservation Area, designated in 2017, and within it eight buildings are listed and around 90% of the buildings are unoccupied or derelict. This project to investigate the buildings within the Kasbah Conservation Area is part of the wider Greater Grimsby Heritage Action Zone project (2018-23). The main aims of this project are to improve our understanding of these buildings, to inform options and opportunities for their reuse while retaining their most important historic features and character.

This is a two-stage brief: the first stage of the brief is for risk assessments and Historic England level 2 surveys of all the buildings, to include a search for any archival records relating to the buildings, to provide information on their local and national context, and to comment on their significance. The second stage of the brief is for Historic England level 3 surveys of all those buildings were access is safe and permissible.
