Description

Further to the successful development of the Advanced Metal Casting Centre (AMCC) and the Advanced Metal Processing Centre (AMPC) within the Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST) at Brunel University London (BUL), the third phase development, the Future Metallurgy Centre (FMC), is now being established to expand this unique national facility for light metal research in processing and characterisation for fundamental research and industrial applications. Together with the EPSRC Future Liquid Metal Engineering Hub, AMCC and AMPC, the FMC will provide high performance light alloys, resource efficient manufacturing technologies and component innovations with advanced materials characterisation facilities to meet the long- and mid-term needs of UK industry.

The Light Flash Analyser (LFA) system is a thermal analysis instrument that determines the thermophysical properties (e.g. thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity) of materials over a wide range of temperatures. It involves irradiation with multiple pulses of energy provided by a Xenon lamp to heat up one surface of a sample located in a measuring cell within a sample chamber maintained at a pre-determined temperature.
