Description
Reductions in regular preventative maintenance at Bishops Waltham Palace has resulted in the spread of woody growth and vegetation across large areas of the site. The west tower, gatehouse and north and south turrets are in particularly poor condition with structural defects and concealed in ivy obscuring their architectural features and enjoyment by the public. Wall-head cappings have failed in several locations and there are significant cracks in walls, allowing water to penetrate the masonry structure. A succession of harsh winters has accelerated the freeze-thaw effect and resulted in masonry failures and opening of joints, leaving further areas of masonry unstable.
