Description

In April 2013 ONR formally started the Generic Design Assessment of Hitachi General Electric Nuclear Energy Ltd's (HGNE) Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR). There are no Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) operating in the UK and, therefore, there is a perception that the UK lacks both experience and expertise in this type of reactor design. Therefore, one of the tasks ONR feels it is required to be undertaken early in the GDA process is a compilation of operational experience from reactors of this type to inform the assessment in the various technical areas covered under GDA.
