The UKs major research facilities are managed and operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council. One of those facilities is ISIS, a neutron and muon source, which has been operational since 1984. The facility has received major investment over its lifetime and continues to be one of the world's leading facilities of its type.
The facility operates a proton accelerator and target moderator system to provide neutron and muons as a probe for materials research. It is used by scientists and industrialists from the UK, Europe and the world.
ISIS wishes to optimise its operations to maximise the value of its scientific output from existing resources. The aim of this study is to understand the interdependency's of the operation, infrastructure and resource and the impact on efficient running of the facility and the effective delivery of the outputs.
ISIS operates for 140 days to provided experimental time for materials scientists. To achieve this there has to be time for set up and maintenance of the accelerator as well as opportunities to make major interventions. The aim of the study is to examine the current operational model for the ISIS accelerator. The operations of the facility have been stable for some time and this study seeks to understand, model and offer improvements to the ISIS management to maximise the impact scientifically by improving the operational model of the Accelerator.
