Description

Arden and GEM Commissioning Support Unit (AGCSU) is acting on behalf of NHS England - Specialised Commissioning in seeking expressions of interests for the provision of Paediatric Obesity Surgery Services. PLEASE NOTE YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO THIS NOTICE IF YOU RECENTLY REGISTERED YOUR INTEREST ON BRAVO UNDER PQQ_452 AS THIS IS AN EXTENSION TO THAT MARKET ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITY.

NHS England would like to use this opportunity to engage with potential providers within the market to help inform its commissioning intentions for future service provision.
NHS England will be looking to commission tier 4 surgery services for children and young adults with complex obesity and who have reached puberty and are under 18 years on a contract length of 3+2 years. Severe obesity in children is a major health problem that is associated with a number of different illnesses. Although there is limited data on the prevalence and incidence of severe obesity in children, it can be deduced that the prevalence of severe obesity is 0.14% of the population. Based on this estimation, there may be 4,360 children with severe obesity in England in 2014/15.
The service will treat children and young adults with severe and complex obesity and who have undergone tier 3 diagnostics and weight loss interventions, including comprehensive psychotherapeutic support. The procedures covered are pre- and postoperative care for gastric sleeve, Roux-en-Y and the fitting of gastric bands.
It is the intention to commission between 2 and 4 centres nationally across NHS England regions for a small number of patients. The commissioning plan includes future planning of a of approx 25 surgeries per annum with a view that this could increase in future years.
