Description
The National Digital Twin programme (NDTp) has made great headway in crafting and communicating a vision of connected Digital Twins as a cross-sector opportunity to support decisions in the context of high future uncertainty (climate, technology, public health, etc) and where many system interactions and cascading consequences exist.
A Digital Twin is a digital representation of a real-world asset, system or process, which is updated at sufficient frequency to inform decisions about interventions on the real-world twin. The two twins are connected through a two-way data exchange: any changes in the physical twin (e.g. traffic volumes on a road or temperature in a building) are picked up by sensors and represented in the digital twin; while changes in the digital one (e.g. changes made to road lay-out or reducing the heating in the building) can be passed onto the physical twin when appropriate. Digital Twins can be used for strategic planning (long-term planning, exploring how the physical asset can be as effective and efficient as possible, before the asset is completely delivered), operational planning (short-term, tactical planning to optimise the use of already existing assets) or active operations (adapting operation of an asset based on frequent feedback on conditions of use). In this context of this tender, only strategic and operational planning are relevant.
