As a function of remoteness of operation and the breadth of the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit's (BASMU) role, medical care covers the complete spectrum of care offered to patients until arriving for definitive care at specialist units/hospitals which lie off the Antarctic continent. This process can be a protracted affair that can involve treatment, medication, monitoring and basic life support through transportation to end point. To fulfil this need BASMU requires robust, multifunctional equipment, that provides sufficient information to inform remote diagnostics and support by specialists until patients can be transferred to hospital.
