Description

The Science Museum's new permanent interactive gallery will engage people with the drama and spectacle of science and maths, making sense of scientific phenomena and drawing on the sense of awe and wonder they create. The space will be sophisticated, welcoming, thought-provoking and inspiring for adults as well as children.
The new gallery will be more than double the size of the existing space and include new exhibits and large scale, immersive experiences, enabling significantly more people to get excited about science, and deepen their understanding and challenge their perceptions of it. Scientific marvels will be beautifully expressed, communicating our enthusiasm and sense of excitement for science.
The gallery will provide more opportunities and support for in-depth, focused exploration and experimentation, with a broader range of content including mathematics and earth and space sections. The exhibits will clearly link science and mathematical principles to the real world and to the Museum's collections, and there will be better equipped, more comfortable and flexible spaces for a wider range of live events.
The Museum is looking to appoint an architect to create the groundbreaking new interactive gallery. The architect, also acting as Lead Designer, will be required to collaborate and coordinate with individual exhibit designers and artists as well as the rest of the design team. This role is crucial to the development of a coherent, sophisticated yet practical design across the gallery and the circa 70 separate exhibits. As well as the refurbishment of circa 2,800m2, which will include circulation space, commercial areas and visitor facilities in addition to the interactive gallery, it is anticipated that this project will also include some internal structural interventions in order to open up space within the identified gallery location.
