Description

The cemetery is an English Heritage Grade II listed site and is also designated a County Wildlife Site. The cemetery's main footpath(s), from the main pedestrian and vehicular entrance off Mill Road, pass through the middle of the cemetery, a number of connecting smaller footpaths navigate the boundary of the cemetery. These footpaths allow access to this important and historic open space which is frequently used by both cyclists and pedestrians. The existing paths have been constructed from an unbound aggregate construction (possibly Carstone) and generally in dry periods the paths are in good condition. Issues arise from the verges either side of the paths being higher than the path surfaces; as the paths are now compacted they are not porous and therefore water pools on the paths, with large puddles in the winter. The purpose of the works will be to improve the continuity and effectiveness of the paths using the existing paths as the foundations. Timber edgings shall be installed to better define the path width; the base will be constructed to re-profile the shape of the path before a new surface layer is put down. The grass verges shall be top soiled and seeded to bring them to the level of the new path. Some of the paths to the east side and through the middle of the cemetery have very little or no construction. To ensure that the paths remain in keeping with the natural and historic environment of the cemetery they shall be constructed using a self-binding aggregate construction, similar in appearance to the existing construction.
