Description

The Service Specification has been developed in line with the General Practice Forward View (NHS England (April 2016)) which describes the NHS's priority for extending access to general practice in the evening and at weekends. The General Practice Forward View published in April 2016 set out plans to enable clinical commissioning groups to commission and fund additional capacity across England to ensure that, by 2020 everyone has improved access to GP services including sufficient routine appointments at evenings and weekends to meet locally determined demand, alongside effective access to out of hours and urgent care services.

The development of Primary Care at scale is a key priority for Sheffield CCG. Improved Access is a significant element of this model, linking Primary Care at scale to the overall Sheffield CCG system model for Urgent and Emergency Care. It will be crucial to ensure the integration of extended access with Out of Hours and Urgent Care services, as the model develops.

Sheffield CCG will work collaboratively with the successful Provider to support the development of the service. It is anticipated that in the future, the service may be extended to deliver cover during weekday practice core hours (Monday - Friday 8:00am - 6.30pm) but this is not included as part of the current specification.

National guidance requires the delivery of this extended access service to be underpinned by seven core requirements:

1. Timings of appointments
2. Capacity
3. Measurement
4. Advertising and Ease of access
5. Digital
6. Inequalities
7. Effective access to wider whole system services

Full details of the Authority's requirements are set out in the Specification in Document 2.
