Description
This requirement is to identify time-limited short-term diagnostic support for London for the molecular testing of respiratory samples against a defined repertoire of virology respiratory tests including COVID-19.
The commissioned service will support PHE, DHSC, and other stakeholders in London to be ready for the public health outbreaks in respiratory viral infections, and the predicted spike in COVID-19 infections over the winter covering from receipt of samples to issue of results and provision of surge capacity in the event of respiratory (non-COVID-19) outbreaks. PHE support for outbreaks of COVID-19 will continue to be provided by the PHE laboratory at Colindale.
The subject of this tender covers the following "public health microbiology" functions, which are required on a 7 day/week basis. These functions include but are not limited to:
- Provision of a 24/7 testing service for respiratory samples using molecular techniques against a defined repertoire of virology respiratory tests including COVID-19.
- Laboratory reporting of clinically significant respiratory viral infections including COVID-19 to the Health Protection Teams (HPT).
- Working with the PHE laboratory network to provide sufficient testing capacity to deal with large respiratory virology or COVID-19 outbreaks sustained over extended periods.
- Liaising with the PHE London Clinical, Scientific and Administration staff to support an effective Public Health Microbiology Service (PHMS) for respiratory viruses and COVID-19 for London.
- Agree to participate in gathering of data relating to respiratory viral infections and COVID-19 on behalf of PHE.
- Consideration of provision of additional work (identification or typing) where not undertaken by a partner reference laboratory, for example flu typing.
