"RSSB has established an Air Quality Steering Group and is in the process of developing an industry led Rail Air Quality Strategy. The strategy will be launched in Spring 2020 and will be underpinned by robust research to measure air quality on the rail network and gain an improved understanding of rail's contribution to pollution levels in Air Quality Management Areas, Clean Air Zones and other sensitive areas.

RSSB is undertaking a mapping project to improve upon existing estimates of rail emissions across the network. This project will increase the resolution of how emissions are mapped spatially and therefore provide a more accurate representation of how rail's contribution to air quality varies at a local level. The project will cover the entire GB rail network but with specific focus on AQMAs and CAZs containing rail assets. This will allow the industry to gain a better understanding of where rail might have significant contribution to poor air quality and what can be done to improve air quality at these locations, if required. The results of the mapping project are to be presented via an online mapping portal to allow the findings to be communicated easily and interactively to stakeholders.
