Description

West Dean Tunnel is situated on a disused branch railway line between Midhurst and Chichester built and operated by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. The railway was opened in 1881 and closed to passenger traffic in the 1930's and ceased operating as a freight line in 1953.
The current Centurion Way path terminates at the West Dean tunnel southern entrance. This specification relates to making the tunnel portal safe for any cyclists or pedestrian that may approach the area.
An engineering visual inspection of the tunnel and tunnel portal has been carried out and forms the basis of this specification. This specification relates to remediating elements of the portal structure to make safe (removal of vegetation, replacing of brickwork and re-pointing of brickwork) and does not involve any large scale structural repairs.
