Description
Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of structurally diverse chemicals that are extremely persistent (either in their own right or because they partially degrade to \"arrowhead\" substances that are). They include polymers as well as smaller molecules. Some are bioaccumulative and toxic, and/or highly mobile. Increasing awareness of the widespread presence of PFAS in environmental media (including people) has heightened regulatory concerns about their potential risks to human health and the environment.
A recent evidence review by the Environment Agency has identified large data gaps in relation to the uses, sources and mass emissions of PFAS in the UK. One of the recommendations of that report was that the Environment Agency should seek more information from the following industrial sectors where PFAS are likely to be used:
- Paper and board (including food contact materials)
- Textiles
- Cleaning products
- Paints and coatings (including printing inks)
We now require a consultant to faciliate a productive level of engagement that delivers representative information for these sectors, based on a standard questionnaire format (to be provided). The resulting evidence base will be used to guide UK decision making about future regulatory interventions.
