Description
Innovation is one of the Department for Business, Energy and Industry Strategy (BEIS) objectives which aims to make the UK a science superpower and increase productivity to create high value of outputs.
The Teddington site houses the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) as part of BEIS testing facilities and is currently undergoing enhancement and development in a bid to strengthen national capability and support the investigation and enforcement of product safety, construction product casework and emerging risks. Chemical, flammability, mechanical and electrical testing of consumer and construction products is an important area for OPSS product testing and research. OPSS also focuses on national calibration and test capabilities in metrology to effectively protect consumers while supporting UK engineering and manufacturing.
OPSS has identified a requirement for a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) as a suitable system which would help to maintain the workflow and data management of the output of the laboratories. The LIMS system will allow the tracking of the life cycle of the sample going through each stage within the lab for testing, as well as generating results automatically and storing them in the same platform. This reduces error in manually recording the data and ensuring there is always a backup of the analysed results if the instrument computer is out of service. Certain tests we carried out within the team generates a huge number of complex data in which manual recording is not feasible for record keeping as well as data analysis.
The location and the movement of samples are logged on the system. This will ensure no loss of samples and maintaining the chain of continuity, which is especially important if the project involves with regulations and the court.
Our aim is to streamline and have a robust workflow process, going from sample reception to the production of test data in our laboratories - 1) Improve efficiency, 2) Decrease the risk of errors, 3) Data back up and 4) Have traceability and record tracking.
