Description

The North East and Tees Valley areas have amongst the lowest rates in the UK of expenditure on R&D, of patents granted, trademarks registered and designs registered.

The LEPs and other government funded bodies aim to address this failing by encouraging increased innovation, and increased knowledge exchange between research intensive organisations such as Universities, and local SMEs.

The consortium of universities of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria and Teesside worked collaboratively to identify demand for a project of this nature.

The Intensive Industrial Innovation Programme (IIIP) projects were developed in order to address the market failures of imperfect information, scale economies and partial public goods. Each partner university will support SMEs by providing highly qualified post graduate individuals to support the company's R&D ambitions.

Funding was awarded in January 2018 to two Intensive Industrial Innovation Programme projects - one in the North East LEP area and one in the Tees Valley LEP area. They are collaborative projects between the 4 Universities and Durham University are the lead partner.

The projects connects SMEs from priority sectors with the region's University research expertise. The research is focused on improvements and developments of new products, processes or services to the business and to the market. A key objective is the retention of skilled researchers in the region, and the creation of new employment opportunities.

A requirement of all ERDF-funded projects under the 2014-2020 Operational Programme in the North East of England is to produce a summative assessment.

This summative assessment will need to test the original assumptions made within the project bid and logic model and provide some final assessment of its services, impact and learning in this market.
