Description
Wellington Monument is a 3 sided stone monument 53m in height standing on the western edge of the Blackdown Hills. Works will require a full height, covered and designed working scaffolding to be erected independently to the monument and substantial structural face and core stone repairs to be carried out as follows:
- Structural strengthening of the obelisk as a whole
- Structural repair of the upper third of the obelisk shaft and replacement of the pyramidion with large stone blocks. Include rebuilding the bulging ashlar on the north elevation, all in larger scale masonry blocks
- Replacement of the smaller blade stones to larger scale masonry blocks
- Mechanical ties in bed joints and a network of sock-type anchors into the core
- Pressure grouting to voids between ashlar and core; reduction of water conduits in the core
- Repointing, including pressure pointing
- Structural repairs to the staircase
- Rebuild the whole of the face stone to the curtain wall, including the buttresses.
Engaging with visitors and National Trust members will form an important part of this project. A viewing platform will form part of the engineers designed works scaffolding
