Description

English Heritage, the guardian of Tintagel Castle, a scheduled ancient monument on the north Cornish coast, is now searching for a dedicated and talented quantity surveying practice to be part of the consultant team for a twenty-first century, cliff top footbridge and an interpretation project to improve understanding of the Dark Age settlement on the headland.

Twenty-eight metres higher than the current crossing and 72m in span, the bridge will open up exhilarating views of the Island, coastline and Atlantic seascape as it traces the path - now lost through collapse and erosion - of the original land-link. Alongside the Dark Age buildings, it is expected to transform the visitor experience.

The new structure has been the focus of a competition to find the design team and as part of the competition, English Heritage has requested a design concept. It envisages an elegant, even structurally daring, concept, which is beautiful in its own right and sensitively balanced with the landscape and exceptional surroundings - the site lying within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

In association with the Bridge and Dark Age buildings project, the successful quantity surveying practice will work with landscape architects on an associated landscape project, which aims to improve access, repair paths and redress erosion on the property, which lies within a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The design competition will be concluded by the end of January 2016 and the whole consultant team will be expected to start work on the feasibility stage of the project immediately.
