Description

The Council's Health and Safety team provides assistance to schools in achieving Statutory compliance. One role of the team is to audit science departments. Audits have identified an accumulation of hazardous substances (defined as a waste possessing one or more of the hazardous properties set out in Annex III of the Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC)).

The waste stream derives from schools that have purchased hazardous substances to fulfil requirements of teaching curriculums and then kept when no longer needed. Most substances will have a safety data sheet classifying the substance but in some cases the chemicals predate the legislative requirement. A list of substances for disposal has been compiled.

To eliminate the risk posed by the substances the collection and disposal of hazardous waste from schools is required.
