British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has a requirement for 10 new Bombardier snowmobiles to support the Thwaites science project and other science programmes in Antarctica.

Bombardier is the preferred provider of snowmobiles to BAS, these particular machines are proven to be highly reliable in the extreme conditions of Antarctica hence the present fleet has grown on this basis and compatibility with the existing fleet now being an important factor. The Bombardier machines have also been tried and tested over time in regards to BAS logistical constraints, being suitable for pre-deployment modification to fit onto BAS ships for shipment to Antarctica and for deployment into Antarctic via BAS aircraft.

BAS currently has a combination of 2-stroke and 4-stroke engine machines deployed in the region and is looking to expand upon this fleet with the addition of ten (10) new 4-stroke machines. The new snowmobiles must be capable of performing in the extreme environment and must provide effective compatibility with existing machines. The new 4-stroke engine snowmobiles will play a critical part in traverse operations for the Thwaites programme and other similar future programmes involving deep field research.

The machines will be shipped to Antarctica via the BAS ship RRS Ernest Shackleton enabling for scientist research to commence in 2018/19. A detailed technical specification is provide herein.
