Description

The Immobilisation Science Laboratory (ISL) is a world-leading centre for nuclear materials and nuclear waste immobilisation research. The ISL provides access to world-class expertise and facilities, thus enabling top-rate research in nuclear waste materials development and durability testing. This is achieved through a multi-material focus, encompassing ceramics, glass and cements, coupled with an understanding of their durability in aqueous media. Through EPSRC investment the ISL will be developing a national user facility (HADES) for the materials science of radioactive waste management and disposal as part of the Sheffield hub. This will build on previous investment of £3M by the Department of Energy and Climate Change and University of Sheffield to establish the allied MIDAS facility.

A dedicated Glovebox system for the handling and processing of uranium and thorium will strengthen the world-leading centre for nuclear materials research at the University of Sheffield.
