Description

Free cycle training has been offered to adults, young people and their families in Sheffield since 2004, as part of the City Council's commitment to get more people cycling, more safely, more often.

Sheffield was one of the first cities to launch the Bikeability Cycle training scheme in 2007. This cycle training standard aims to equip people with the skills to negotiate Sheffield's increasingly busy roads.

The reduction of cycling casualties is part of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership Action Plan. In the last five years 88 cyclists under the age of 18 were injured on Sheffield's roads.

The majority of these were males between the age of 11-17 years.

The cycle accidents involving children are mainly as a result of:
• riding into the road off the pavement
• failing to look properly
• being careless or reckless/in a hurry

The Bikeability training should highlight to the children of Sheffield the causes outlined above of cycling accidents and ensure that children are given the skills and understanding to prevent them from becoming another of our statistics.

The aim is to:
• improve their cycle skills and road sense
• increase confidence in cycling

Level 1/2 & 3 cycle training aims to address these issues and encourage more children to cycle more safely.

The Bikeability Plus will encourage young people to start cycling before completing the Level1/2 & 3 Training

Within this context, Sheffield City Council would like to contract out the organisation, monitoring, evaluation and delivery of Level 1/2 & 3 and Bikeability Plus cycle training.
