Description

Historic England is seeking to engage with community groups and organisations (and through them a wider pool of volunteers) based in, or working within, the areas or Local Authority Districts of Blackpool, Whitby (Scarborough), Maryport (Allerdale), Barrow-in-Furness or Whitehaven (Copeland), on an important piece of work which we are undertaking.

The project aims are to support ongoing work to improve engagement opportunities with the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) which is more commonly known as the List. In 2021-22, three pilot projects undertaken with external partners, such as civic or amenity societies, assessed the condition of the List in three selected areas.

As well as helping us to improve our understanding of issues and limitations with the information contained within the List, this second phase of projects will help more people and communities connect with, and better understand, the extent and value of their local heritage. The work will help familiarise you and your team of volunteers with the regimes in place to help protect and promote this heritage, while giving you closer involvement with the designated heritage of your own area.
