Description
United Kingdom Research & Innovation (UKRI), through its centre/survey the British Geological Survey (BGS), invites tenders for the provision of drilling and (possible) other site services to support project monitoring and research activities. The purpose of the project is to improve the understanding of movement of fluids and possible chemical changes in aquifers and overlying strata.
It is planned that the work shall be carried out at one site to the south of Pickering, around Great Habton, North Yorkshire.
If the preferred site is not accessible to BGS, any alternative site shall be in the area of a radius of approximately 5 miles of the above.
At the site, two boreholes shall be drilled to provide:
a. Improved understanding of the underlying geology and fluids.
b. Core from one of the boreholes to be drilled, extracted in liner tubes, cut, sealed and boxed in 1m or 1.5m runs.
c. Cuttings from the other borehole to be collected 1m-2m intervals.
d. Access to the boreholes to enable aquifer properties to be determined by geophysical logging, and for the likely establishment of multi-level water sampling systems.
e. The completed boreholes to be used as a monitoring borehole for scientific purposes.
It is planned to drill a fully cored borehole from Ground Level (GL) to a Total Depth (TD) of approximately 225m and another non-cored borehole to 150m TD. The borehole to 225m depth will penetrate the Ampthill & Kimmeridge Clay Formations overlying the Corallian limestone, Oxford Clay and Ravenscar Formation at its base.
