Description

The Department of Civil Engineering is a world leader in the area of Blast and Ballistic effects research. Its work at the Buxton labs range from large calibre ballistics (internal and external) to full-scale blast effects. The lab provides world leading industrial and fundamental research and its research informs excellence in teaching in the area of protection systems.

We seek to determine the evolving thermo-chemical state of the post-detonation fireball, the effect of rapid afterburn on early stage energy release, and the consequences for pressure loading. To conduct this work, we will design and fabricate a proposed Mechanisms of Blast Loading facility in which we will detonate explosive charges resulting in a 1-dimensionally propagating fireball.
